Thursday, September 28th marked the beginning of playoffs for the Union City Lady Tigers volleyball team. The ladies would be traveling to Holland Hall for a chance to make a run in the State Tournament. The Lady Tigers were shorthanded going into Regionals due to Sophmore Brionah O’Neal coming down with an injury. However, Senior, Alex Chipps who was recently released was there to fill the void.
Game 1 UC vs Salina
It was a tough match for Union City facing off with #14 ranked Salina. The Lady Tigers came out slow leaving room for Salina to take the lead. The first and second set were much alike as it was difficult for the ladies to find momentum. The ladies fell to Salina 25-19 in the first set and 28-26 in the second.
The third set brought excitement to the stands as the Lady Tigers held a strong lead throughout it. Junior, Hunter Johnson led the team with 22 kills followed closely by senior Alex Chipps with 20. Union City took the set from Salina with a score of 25-18. The win gave the ladies a strong mindset. The Lady Tigers were not done fighting and had high hopes going into the next set. The fourth set was a battle between the two teams, a fight to the finish. UC kept good spirits and never let their heads down. Union took the set from Salina 27-25. The fifth and final set was in play, the Lady Tigers jumped out in front with the lead and did not look back. Union City took the last set from Salina 15-10. The ladies would face off with Holland Hall in the Regional Finals.
Game 2 UC vs Holland Hall
Union City took to the court against Holland Hall in the Regional Finals. The ladies came out with energy in hopes of bringing the Dutch down. It was a fight and the Lady Tigers were not going to give up. Union City fell short to Holland Hall 25-17 in the first set. Going in to the second set, UC had redemption on their mind. It was a well fought game filled with many exceptionally great plays, but again the Tigers could not pull out the win, buckling under the Dutch 25-19. The third and what would be the final set, Union City stayed headstrong and fought to the end. The ladies put it all out onto the court but it wasn’t enough. Holland Hall took the last set 25-12.
The Union City Community would like to thank the seniors, Allisen Corlee, Alycia Johns, Michael Bolles, Alex Chipps, and Caitlyn Maddox, for their dedication and hard work the past 4 years. You will be missed on the court.
