On Tuesday, January 23 the Union City Tigers traveled to Calumet. To kick things off the girls game was a low scoring, defensive battle.
Hunter Johnson started the game off good, draining the first 3 pointer. Jamie Schieber added. 2 points to the score. On the defensive Auden of the ball, Union City worked to the best of their ability, only allowing for the Calumet Chieftains to score 4 points during the first quarter. The first quarter of the game ended with the Tigers in the lead, 6-4, but the Chieftains played hard. By the end of the first half of the game, the score was 16- 11, the Tigers were falling behind yet they were determined.
The third quarter was a fight, Hunter Johnson scored 5 points, Rylee Loudermilk with 3, and Livia Nelson and Alex Chipps both had 2. Although the final score was a close 38-33, the Lady Tigers played with excellence, Johnson having scored a whopping 21 points, Chipps with 5 total points, Loudermilk having 3 and Schieber and Nelson with 2 each.
The boys entered with their game faces on, which made for a very interesting and exciting first quarter. Jack Walkabout came on top with two 3 pointers, tying 6 points into the score. Xavier Morales and Nando Pizano both added 3 points of their own, and Cail Williams added 2. It didn’t end there, though. The game instantly got intense when the second quarter started. Calumets defense stepped up, distanced themselves and ran away with the game. The ending score of the second quarter was 39-27, in favor of the Chieftains.
Turnovers were a big factor in the second half as the Tigers fell to the Chieftains in a final score of 80-52. The Tigers leading scores were from Cail Williams and Xavier Morales, both having contributed 10 points.
Union City will be back in action Saturday, January 27 against Ninnekah.
