Coach Griggs and his Union City Tigers JH squad just completed an undefeated season. The Tigers finished the season with a record of 12-0.
Every game you could count on Caleb McSpadden leading the game off with a walk or base hit. McSpadden jump started each game and swung the momentum immediately in the Tigers favor. The Tigers were made up of many good contact hitters that would bring McSpadden around the bases. J.D. Riley also was a huge factor on the base paths as his speed was something other teams dreaded to face. Also, Dalton Harris contributed at the plate. Coach Griggs stated “Dalton Harris has worked hard to get into the lineup and came up with some big hits.”
Shane McNeil led the Tigers on the mound. He was a key factor in the Ninnekah Championship game that the Tigers eventually won by a score of 6-1. Dalton “Lights Out” Stout was a good compliment on the mound. Stout saw many innings on the mound along with McNeil as these two consistently threw strikes.
The Tigers defense was a vital part in the Tigers success. Brayden Armstrong’s improvement at the catcher position, helped keep runners from advancing. In the infield, Union City made very few mistakes. Coach Griggs added that “Bo McKinney was a vacuum at second base.” Blake Ross played good defense all season. The Tigers leaned on Tyler Norton’s knowledge of the game and his ability to play multiple positions. The Tigers bench stayed energetic and positve. They did their part when called upon. Coach Duvall also had to step in on certain days that Coach Griggs could not be there due to traveling with the high school team. Griggs added ” its great to add Coach Duvall to the coaching staff. He wants to win as much as the boys do.”Coach Griggs stated ” I really need to push this team in the spring. I am beefing up the schedule. I’ll celebrate if we have the same type of outcome in the spring but until then we have unfinished business.”
