The Ninnekah Owls traveled to Tiger Arena for the Tigers final game before Christmas Break. Union City looked to close out the first half of the season with a win and they did just that. It took overtime but Union City powered past the Owls by a score of 69-63.
The boys in blue jumped out to a quick lead in the first few minutes of the game on the hot hands of Nando Pizano and Tyler Ross. They combined for 10 of the Tigers 16 first quarter points. Ninnekah kept the score close by hitting three 3 pointers of their own. After one quarter of play it was evident that this game was going to come down to the final few minutes. At the midway point, UC had a two point lead, 33-31.
Tyler Ross’s 12 point 3rd quarter swung the momentum in favor of Union City in the second half. UC held onto a 9 point lead going into the fourth quarter but the Owls had different plans and took a 2 point lead with a little over a minute to go in the game. Pizano tied things back up with about 40 seconds to play and things got crazy from there. Neither team could score in the final 40 seconds and a Jason Schieber last second half court shot fell just shy of going in so we headed to overtime.
The Tigers got on the board in the first 4 seconds as Jason Schieber tipped the ball directly to Ross and the Tigers held the lead from that point on. The Tigers went 6-9 from the charity stripe in overtime and the defense held the Owls to only 4 points.
Nando Pizano led the Tigers with 23 points. Tyler Ross added 21, Jason Schieber with 9, Hunter Horton 7, Wyatt Norton 5 and Bryson Hays with 4.
The Tigers improved their record to 4-7 on the season and have won 2 of their past 3. Union City will be back in action after the break.
