Multiple Teams · Lady Tigers Hit Their Stride on Senior Night

Written by: Emily Loughridge

Last night the Lady Tigers made history in many ways. The ladies held their first-ever Senior Night during the season, and it was a success!! Also in the first inning against Calumet, Sabrie Locke, one of the three seniors, hit Union City’s first-ever home run in fastpitch.

The Lady Tigers knew that tonight could be a tide-turner for their season, and the ladies made sure that the night went in their favor. The dugout was full of energy throughout both games, with nonstop chanting, high fives, and big smiles. The fans were hooping and hollering late into the evening; all of this and more set the mood for the ladies as they snagged two wins and improved their record to 11-10.

The girls in blue flew around the bases and had their sticks going. As previously mentioned, Sabrie Locke hit a home run and Locke also led her team in total bases with four against Calumet. Mackinzie DeLong and Kaitlyn Linson moved runners around the bases with two RBI’s apiece. MaKenna DeLong showed off her wheels by leading the ladies in stolen bases.

The Lady Tigers were hot on defense as well, with a double play by freshman, Haylie McCoy, in the second inning. The defense kept their reactions quick and didn’t allow any base hits until the top of the third. Against the Lady Chieftains, Emily Griggs pitched four innings throwing 53% strikes, striking out two, allowing only two hits, and no runs for the game. The Lady Tigers shut out Calumet with a final of 10-0.

Coach Schmidt stated “We came to play today in all facets of the game. We were aggressive at the plate and on the base paths. We had quality at-bats at the plate and our defense and pitching showed up. We need to keep this going into playoffs next week.”

Although Union City had to sit a game, they jumped right back into their rhythm. Cashion scored two runs in the first, and the ladies responded by scoring one. Union City dominated the plate against Cashion. Senior, Emily Loughridge, led the team in total bases with six, after getting a double and a triple. MaKenna DeLong led with four hits and DeLong, Loughridge, and Locke all led the team in RBI’s with three apiece. Senior, Meadow Schranz, had wheels last night, flying around the base paths, leading the team with three stolen bases. The ladies were aggressive at the plate with no strikeouts and 11 hits.

Emily Griggs locked in again against the Lady Wildcats. Griggs threw 68% strikes and struck out two. The Lady Wildcats did not lie down, they fought hard and got nine hits and seven runs; however, the Lady Tigers’ defense was on point, only making one error all night. To end the game Haylie McCoy singled with a fly ball to right and scores Linson and Locke to run-ruled the Lady Wildcats 17-7.

Schmidt stated “I am proud of these girls and the seniors but we still have work to do. We set a goal at the start of the season to win more games than we did last year and we have now done that with 10 wins. Now, we will set a new goal for the final week of the season.”

The Lady Tigers are building their momentum as they head towards playoffs next week. The ladies will hop on the bus on Sept. 17th to face the Cashion Lady Wildcats again, JH and HS will play beginning at 4:00! Please come out and support theses energetic Tigers!
